100 Men of Kawartha Lakes
Congratulations to the Kawartha Food Source!
Last night marked the end of 7 years of the 100 Men of Kawartha Lakes. It felt special. We crossed total giving of $250,000…not bad for four 1-hour meetings per year! We had 11 new walk-in members and now have, get this, 174 members!
We finished our first year with Kawartha Community Foundation handling payments, tax receipts and cutting one cheque to the charity of choice. (The charities appreciate not having to write 174 individual tax receipts). And last night, because the guys can prepay for the whole year, we cut a cheque for $10,000 and gave it that night to the Kawartha Food Source. We also gave $1,000 cheques to Lindsay Agricultural Society and the Weldon High School Robotics team!
It’s amazing how a simple great idea can spread. All you need are some big hearts to pool a little cash. “Turn your $100 into $17,400 in one hour!” (It’s like magic). With so many charities in crisis mode right now, it’s great to see people coming together to help. We have a great word for it…community:)
Who Are the 100 Men?
The 100 Men are simply a mix of big-hearted guys connected by their love of the community. They like the idea of their money being matched by others to make a bigger impact. They like simple and effortless, not to mention hanging out for one hour every three months with some great guys that live in Kawartha Lakes.
Is 100 Men of Kawartha Lakes for you?
Whether you’re a business person, elected official, working for a company or retired, if the above sounds like you, we’d love for you to join us!
And yes, we know, it’s only men. It was actually the women that started their own 100 Women that Care group and told us men to start our own…so we did!
How it Works
As a member, you commit to donating $102 per meeting, with 4 meetings held annually on the first Thursday of March, June, September, and December—each lasting just 1 hour. If you’re unable to attend, no worries—you can still participate by submitting a proxy vote!
Many members love that they can be part of the group’s collective giving, even if they can’t attend every meeting.
We’ve partnered with the Kawartha Lakes Community Foundation to manage donations, making tax receipt distribution easier for our charities. Members can donate conveniently via e-transfer, credit card, cheque, or cash—and you can even donate for the entire year at once!
Each member can nominate a local registered Kawartha Lakes charity for consideration. Before each meeting, three charities will be randomly selected to make a 5-minute presentation to the group.
Afterward, members will vote for one of the three. The charity with the most votes will receive the bulk of our donations.
Exciting update: the other two charities will now receive $1,000 each as well! Currently, the primary charity receives $13,000+ while the runners-up receive $1,000 each.
Our membership is unlimited, and we’re thrilled to have 174 members and counting!
